The Choir was formed by Phil Parkin in 1995 to present Roger Jones´ Musicals in and around Birmingham. It is an ecumenical choir made up of members of churches from all over the West Midlands and has approximately eighty members.

To date the choir has performed Jairus Daughter, Saints Alive, From Pharaoh to Freedom, Simeon, Greater than Gold, Mary Magdalene, Jerusalem Joy, While Shepherds Watched, Angel Voices, Apostle, Pharisee, Away in a Manger, Stargazers, Snakes & Ladders, David, A Grain of Mustard Seed and Saints Alive!.

Phil Parkin retired from CMM in December 2005 and his baton has been taken up by Penny King (some will know her as Penny Wheble), who has been involved with CMM for many years. Born in London, Penny studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music. In her own words her story continues:

Penny King

In 1970 Peter and I met through singing in a folk group together. Following our marriage, we moved to the Midlands and have 3 grown up children, Simon, Catharine and Alex. I have been teaching singing and piano now for nearly 27 years (which makes me feel very old!), and love to see people growing in their musicality and confidence. It makes life all worth-while.I became a Christian in 1987, and since the time when I offered all that I was to God, He has transformed my life. I had had a fairly busy career singing as soloist with choral societies and giving recitals, but that was to change...God had other plans for my life! In 1990, with my best friend, Erica Thomas, I founded the Credo Singers - a choir for Christians to sing music, (other than hymns) and to have fellowship together. I also became Director of Music at St. Martinīs Church in Walsall. Around the same time, I was asked to train a choir for Walsall as part of a tour for Roger Jones´ musicals.

Sylvia Whalley

There is also a smaller Group meeting in West Birmingham, under the direction of Sylvia Whalley. They join with the main CMM Choir for local Productions.

New members of the CMM CHOIR are always welcome. You do not have to have an audition and you do not have to be able to read music. Contact the CMM office for details. (events@cmm.org.uk)
