Roger Jones and Family
ROGER JONES was born in Birmingham and trained at the Birmingham School of Music. He then spent 16 years at Aston Manor School in Birmingham teaching music, and eventually became Head of Lower School. In the early 1970s he began writing songs for his School Choir about Easter, whichemerged as a Cantata entitled ´Jerusalem Joy´.
Roger first began composing, so as to involve as many as possible in music-making and in telling bible stories and Christian truths in a fun and accessible way. Further Musicals followed with ´Stargazers´, ´Apostle´, ´David´, ´A Grain of Mustard Seed´, ´Saints Alive´ and ´Greater than Gold´.
Just prior to the publication of ´From Pharaoh to Freedom´ in 1984, Roger gave up teaching to become involved in full-time Christian Music. In addition to writing and performing musicals, Roger also directs Christian Music Ministries, (CMM) who now publish his material. CMM lead music workshops, conferences, courses and seminars about worship, praise and renewal throughout this country and abroad, as well as running a mail order service supplying music and worship resources.
Further musicals have followed with ´While Shepherds Watched´, ´Away in a Manger´, ´Mary Magdalene´, and ´Jairus´ Daughter´ written in 1992 to celebrate the Girls´ Brigade Centenary celebrations. ´Angel Voices´ came next, and then ´Pharisee´, the story of Nicodemus. In 1999, Kevin Mayhew Ltd published the ´Roger Jones Hymn Collection´, containing all of Roger´s new Hymn-tune settings, some never published before.
In 1999 CMM published Roger´s musical ´Snakes & Ladders´ which toured England in 1999 & 2000. In 2001 he presented it in Canada, Scotland and the Channel Islands. June 2001 saw the publication the ´Roger Jones Christmas Collection´, which contained 25 new seasonal songs and carols. He has also written various collections of worship songs which he uses in his on-going itinerant ministry.
2002 saw the release of ´Wildfire´, the story of St Stephen, and this musical toured UK (2002-03) and in 2004 Roger presented it in India & Canada, as well as touring with it in Scotland, Guernsey, Isle of Wight and Bognor Regis!
In 2005 came the biggest project so far, ´JAIL BREAK´ – Paul in Philippi, Acts 16. This musical was launched in October 2005 in Birmingham, introduced by the Archbishop of York John Sentamu, followed by the first UK Tour. 2006 had two more Tours, culminating in a masssed choir production on Saturday 22 July at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
´THE INN CROWD´, a christmas musical was launched in July 2007, and already has had performances in India, Hawai and all over UK.
´ROCK´, the story of Simon Peter premiered in November 2008 and toured the UK in March, April, June & October 2009 with a massed choirs finale at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on 14 November 2009. In 2013 ROCK was performed in Jerusalem and Bethlehem amongst Israelis and Palestinians.
´Seasons & Reasons´ – In 2010 Roger produced this hymn collaboration with Bishop Timothy Dudley–Smith, using the Bishop´s words and Roger´s music, some of which was written especially for this work.
´Two Sisters & A funeral´ the story of Martha, Mary & Lazarus was also launched in 2010 and was performed as far away as Canada in 2011, as well as forming the key part in a Cyprus mission in 2013.
´Worship Works´ – In 2013 Roger co–wrote with Annie Routley and Helen Pollard this practical workbook. It is based on a culmination of many years teaching & seminars on worship. Roger, Helen and Annie regularly take Worship Works weekends around the country.
´Barnabas´ – Roger´s latest musical following Paul and Barnabas across Cyprus is due to be launched in September 2015.
For a number of years Roger has been a mentor of students with the RSCM (Royal School of Church Music).
Roger is married to Mary and they have 4 children and 4 grandchildren, Michael (12), Bethany (10), Molly (3) and Henry (2).
It is four years since Roger moved from East Birmingham to where they live now in Lickey End, Worcestershire. Mary and Roger feel very at home at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on top of the Lickey Hills, where Roger is a Lay Reader, although they are often away because of the CMM ministry. The folk at Holy Trinity are very supportive of their Ministry, for which they are very grateful.
Roger and Mary have a "bolt hole" flat in Weston–super–Mare, where they often spend time with family and friends, particularly walking Poppy on the beach. Although he is rarely able to go, Roger enthusiastically follows Birmingham City, and in the summer months is a keen supporter of Warwickshire County Cricket Club. (In his playing days Roger appeared for a number of cricket teams, including Nether Whitacre and the Birmingham Diocese Clergy.)
Roger and Mary Jones are members of the East Birmingham Renewal Group (EBRG) and financially supported by the EBRG Trust.
Mary – Before having the family Mary was a Nurse, eventually becoming a District Nursing Sister. Mary enjoys Ballet (watching!) and Classical Music. She now has the time to go on a lot more of Roger´s trips and also regularly helps out with her youngest grandchildren, Molly and Henry. Mary has settled into life at Lickey Church and regularly takes part in their ´Singing for Fun´ group.
Tim is Head of Sales at CMM, and deals with online orders and the Christian book trade. He also arranges songs for new musicals, and has produced two backing tracks albums, Born in the Night (Christmas carols and songs) and See, what a Morning (Easter songs and hymns). Another one based on the Holy Spirit/ministry is in the works.
Emma is enjoying teaching at St Francis Primary School in Bournville. She also co-leads the youth house group at church.
Michael is thriving at school, and passed grade 3 piano in 2012. He has been playing guitar for 2 years, and has now easily surpassed his Dad in terms of technical ability! Michael is excelling at his gymnastics, and regularly takes part in competitions where he consistently gets some of the top marks for individual and team performance. The medal collection gets ever bigger.
Bethany is consistently top of her class at school in most subjects. She passed grade 1 piano in 2012, and is making excellent progress with her violin.
She is determined to overtake Mum one day! Bethany is continuing to progress with her ballet, having passed 2 exams and taken part in 2 full scale dance productions with her ballet school.
All the family have settled in to Bromsgrove Baptist Church. Tim regularly plays drums and keyboard in the worship band, and Emma plays violin. Michael is now playing guitar in the band several times a month. Bethany hopes to play violin for services soon, and occasionally fills in on drums when Dad is on keyboard!
Andrew – Having completed his HND Course in Graphic Design at Newcastle College, Andrew is now working in graphic design at Aston Science Park, Birmingham. He has created the designs for Roger´s recent Musicals. Andrew married Gemma in 2010 and they have a son called Henry
Peter died suddenly in May 2002 at the age of 22. He was a qualified Drum Teacher, and studied Contemporary Popular Music at the Birmingham Academy of Music. Sally married Karl in 2010 and they have a lovely daughter called Molly who is 3. They are now worshipping at Zion Christian Centre, Halesowen.
Tara sadly lost her battle with cancer in February 2007. Tara was a member of the Jones household for over ten years, and gave us amazing pleasure and satisfaction. She wasn´t very musical but excelled at sleeping on chairs, settees, and beds, etc. She loved chocolate, walks and cuddles! We all miss her terribly, but are thankful for the wonderful years we had with her.

Poppy joined us in April 2007 at the age of 8 weeks. She is a great bundle of fun, very mischievous, but extremely lovable! She came to us via "Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue". Her mother was a greyhound cross, but her father was unknown!
She has won several rosettes in dog shows for doing nothing at all!
