Hi everyone,
It’s barely the end of Summer and are we already thinking about Christmas? When I was Head of Music, by the start of the September term I was already planning for the school Christmas production!
At CMM we have SIX Christmas Musicals, all with different themes and expressions. What not consider getting a choir together or using an existing one to present one of these works? It’s a good opportunity to provide material that is true to the Biblical story, whether for Advent, Christmas or Epiphany.
Together with Annie, we’ve made a video introduction to these musicals. You can find it on YouTube here.
STARGAZERS – my first musical/cantata for Christmas, (really Epiphany but lots do with Christmas.) It has 11 songs, with simple harmony, and a bonus carol Angels from the realms of glory – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=sta
WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED – more SATB here, but easily adaptable – 10 songs including Sheep, Come see the beauty – 45-60 mins with optional drama – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=ws
AWAY IN A MANGER – originally written for my daughter Sally’s primary school – mostly unison voices with older soloist – 9 songs – 20-30 mins long – suggestions for Nativity drama – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=aiam
SIMEON – Christmas story told by the old man Simeon – 10 songs – SATB parts, easily adapted – covers Advent to Epiphany – about 45 mins long – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=sim
THE INN CROWD – straight forward “panto-like” telling of the Christmas story by the Inn-Keeper and Wife (the recording features Devon Brown and Katie Leaver) – SATB, with new settings of various carols including Infant Holy, Brightest and Best, etc – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=tic
THREE WISE CAMELS – our latest! – obvious what it’s about! – 8 songs, including new tune for We Three Kings, The King of Love – a lot of fun, but with a serious message – I’m very thrilled with this musical, written mostly during “lockdown” – https://www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=twc
I’m so convinced of the value of singing together, and the opportunity for “ad hoc” or existing community/church choirs to get folk involved in “spreading the word”! My former Vicar Peter Lawrence once said: “Come and join the choir – you don’t have to be able to sing to be in one of Roger’s musicals.” I take that as a compliment!
They are for all abilities, singers, instrumentalists and others!
